Schola Exe, is the Senior County Choir for girls in Years 9 – 13 and boys with unchanged voices aged 13 and above. It is administered and directed by Rachel Smith (Head of Junior Music, The Maynard School, Exeter), assisted by Michael Graham. The choir was formed in February 2012.
About the Choir:
The repertoire is as varied as possible, with a mixture of sacred and secular music, from the Renaissance to modern day pop classics and songs from the shows.
Weekly practices are held on Saturdays from 11.30am - 12.45pm in Kalendar Hall, South Street, Exeter (the Music Department of Exeter Cathedral School).
For an application form to join Schola Exe, please click HERE. Please send completed application forms to Rachel Smith who will then contact you about your child's first rehearsal.
Admission to the choir requires the successful completion of an audition. You will need to have a prepared song to sing to us (please bring an accompaniment too) and we shall also do some simple ear tests. Auditions are arranged as soon as possible after the receipt of your application.
As Schola Exe is entirely financially dependent upon grants and donations, we invite parents to make a termly donation to contribute towards the running costs of Schola Exe (we suggest £35 a term).
A brief history:
Since its formation, Schola Exe has given many concerts in Exeter Cathedral and its Chapter House. It has participated in performances of Faure's Requiem and Britten's St Nicolas. It has sung Evensong in the Cathedral with the Gentlemen of the Cathedral Choir and performed in Devon Music Service's Excellence in Singing Concert, also in the Cathedral. In December 2014, Schola Exe performed in two Carol Concerts in Exeter Cathedral with Exeter Philharmonic Choir and in November 2015 gave a celebratory concert in Teignmouth in November before singing in the Emergency Services Carol Service in Exeter Cathedral the following month. It has also participated in two workshops studying Mendelssohn's Elijah and Verdi's Requiem and performed in Britten's War Requiem in the Cathedral in April 2016.
A full list of performances can be found on the Performances page of this website.
All staff are subject to Enhanced DBS Disclosure.
Parent helpers are Clare Benson, Stefanie Hastie and Maggie Tamblin (Choir Photographer).
